Freedom

B. Keith Chapman, President & CEO

The word freedom can trigger a number of emotional reactions based on various levels of appreciation we have for its meaning. To some, freedom primarily describes the rights that we have to act, speak, or worship as we choose. Some relate freedom with sacrifice and have a deep appreciation for those who serve or have served in the military. Others relate freedom to a state of not being incarcerated, enslaved, or depressed. Regardless of how you relate to or appreciate freedom, it is important to remember that freedom, in any form, cannot exist without struggle and sacrifice. Albert Einstein once said, “Freedom, in any case, is only possible by constantly struggling for it.” When we hear the word freedom, most of us relate it to the freedoms we enjoy as a nation. You may be thinking that freedom would be a more appropriate topic for the month of July when we celebrate our Country’s independence. However, freedom is much more than the rights we enjoy collectively as a nation.

The freedom I want to focus on is the one Jesus describes in John chapter 8. While teaching to a group of people, Jesus said in verses 31 and 32, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus goes on to say in verse 36, “So, if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you will be free indeed.” I love this statement because it reminds us that no matter our circumstances, doubt, or fear, if the God of the universe sets us free then we are free… period! In December, we celebrate Christmas and prepare to bring in a new year. Christmas is so much more than just food, gifts, and decorations. For believers, we will celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior. Jesus was born with one mission. That mission was accomplished when He died on the cross paying the ultimate price for our freedom. While the price has been paid for each of us, we have an individual responsibility to walk in that freedom. Jesus made it very clear to his disciples in John 14:6 when he said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” The simple truth to this passage is there is only one way to experience this kind of freedom and that is through a relationship with Jesus.

The holiday season is filled with traditions, family, and fellowship. However, this time of year also brings some very difficult times for those facing strongholds, grief, depression, and a host of other struggles. For believers, we need to be reminded from time to time that “Who the Son sets free is free indeed!” This is an all-inclusive freedom that gives us the power to overcome challenges and experience a life of joy. No one has ever promised that life would be easy. However, there is only ONE who loved us enough to pay the price for our freedom, and his name is Jesus. As we approach the end of this crazy, confusing, and sometimes stressful year, enjoy your time with family and friends, but let’s not forget the real reason to celebrate Christmas.

Challenge: Never forget that Jesus paid the price for our freedom. Remind yourself in difficult times, “Who the Son sets free is free indeed!” Use this powerful truth to overcome challenges and encourage others.

I pray that each of you and your family has a Merry Christmas and a blessed 2021! – Keith
