History Matters

History plays an important part in our understanding of the world around us. It provides perspective on things that were good and bad, helping us learn from the past while guiding our future. History has value that should be used to promote improvement, avoid repeating similar mistakes, and serve as a reminder of truth. It shapes our identity and influences the values and principles that become part of our everyday life. Equally important, history gives hope by showing that growth, restoration, and change are all possible. Our spiritual history is no exception to these truths. Each one of us has a spiritual history, whether we realize it or not.

 

Maybe you do not have years of church attendance behind you. Maybe your prayers feel awkward and inconsistent. Maybe your past is filled with failure, regret, or long stretches when you ignored God completely. In circumstances like these, it is easy to believe we have no history with God or opportunity for real connection. However, the Gospel tells a different story. Regardless of our feelings, God has a history with each of us, and the cross proves it.

 

Long before you thought of whispering a prayer, opening a Bible, or stepping into a church, Jesus chose the cross for you. His sacrifice was not a reaction to your goodness; it was an expression of His love. The foundation of your relationship with God is not your record with Him but rather His sacrifice for you. Romans 5:8 (NLT) states, “But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” Pay close attention to the last words, “while we were still sinners.” God did not wait for the world to clean itself up before He acted. Jesus did not climb onto the cross after we proved worthy. He committed His life when we were lost, broken, and undeserving. That means the cross is Heaven’s declaration that you were on God’s mind long before you ever thought about Him.

 

Sometimes people hesitate to approach God because they feel spiritually unqualified. They compare themselves to lifelong believers or people who seem deeply mature in faith. But Christianity has never been about earning permission to God’s presence through achievements. It begins with an understanding and appreciation of what Christ has already done. W. Tozer once wrote, “Jesus Christ knows the worst about you. Nonetheless, He is the one who loves you most.” Your history with God does not begin the day you finally “get your life together.” Your history with God began at Calvary, where Jesus willingly gave Himself for you. And because Jesus rose again, your story does not have to end where your failures began. God’s grace provides a new future for all who accept it.

Ephesians 2:13 (NLT) states, “But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.” Because of the cross, the doubter can find faith. The lost can come home. The broken can be restored. The person hiding in shame can discover forgiveness. No one is beyond the reach of Christ’s love. When you doubt the history you have with Christ, remember the sacrifice He already made for you.
