Gear Cleaning & Repair Associate

Description

SUMMARY: The Cleaning & Repair Associate is responsible for the inspection, preparation, and repair of heavy-duty firefighting gear in accordance with industry guidelines and standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include but are not limited to the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

  • Receive gear, create a work order, and related instructions.
  • Inspect & disassemble, separating shells and liners.
  • Review gear for deep stains, tears, holes, and other damage.
  • Pretreat and clean gear under company standards and industry requirements.
  • Reinspect and document gear condition, identifying any damage for repair.
  • Submit work order and repair instructions for the cleaned structural gear to the repair department.
  • Complete required inspection forms & accurately update company software program(s).
  • Select supplies such as thread, fasteners, elastic, zippers, snaps, and rivets according to job specifications.
  • Inspect, mark, patch, and repair holes and tears in gear in accordance with manufacturer specifications (pins and needles are not permitted to be used in the process of marking, setting patterns, or repairing gear).
  • Add or replace radio pockets, flashlight holders, wristlets, padding & reflective trim.
  • Inspect finished product to ensure high-quality standards.
  • Prepare and package completed gear for return to the customer.
  • Adjust the machine as needed to compensate for errors or quality issues.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance tasks such as replacing needles and cleaning machines.
  • Troubleshoot machinery problems and request service as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Proficient verbal and written communication skills in English are required.  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to create standard correspondence, both written and verbal.  Ability to work from oral and written instructions.

LANGUAGE WRITING SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to create standard correspondence. Proficient verbal communication skills in English are required.

EDUCATION: 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of two (2) years industrial-level sewing experience required.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to apply concepts of basic mathematics, algebra, and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions in written and oral form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variances in standardized specifications.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.

  • Experience and knowledge of safe sewing techniques, basic commercial sewing machine adjustments, and use.
  • Basic and advanced knowledge of different types of alteration.
  • Able to adapt to changing priorities and division needs.
  • Good hand-eye coordination, concentration skills, and demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Strong Communication
  • Ability to troubleshoot material specs, best practices & solutions.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Ability to operate an industrial sewing machine safely.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye wear, mask and gloves.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and twist frequently.
  • Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry materials up to 50 lbs.

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Indoors: Inside work has good ventilation and a comfortable temperature.
